A low credit score can be frustrating and prove to be costly. However, no matter how bad your score is, it can certainly be improved. The most important thing is to act fast, the more you delay, the more difficult the process of improving the score will get. Following are some useful tips you can use to repair your credit yourself:

1.   Don't use your Credit Card

If you continue making purchases using your credit card and keep accumulating debts, you can do a lot of damage to your credit score as you are unable to pay for the debt. The best thing to do when your score is low is to put your credit cards away until your score is a bit better. Some have placed there cards in a container of water and placed it in there refrigerator, some have hidden them in there attic, or you can simple cut it and dispose of it.

2.   Obtain a copy of credit report

The first thing you need to do before starting the process of self credit repair is to assess how much damage has been done. In order to do this, you need to go through your credit report, a copy of which can be obtained from any of the major credit card bureaus, in order to see which accounts need working on and which are just fine.

3.   Clean up Credit Report

There is always the possibility that there are certain wrong entries in your credit report. If you find any such incorrect entry on your credit report, you have the right to get the entry corrected.

4.   Getting Current on Delinquent Accounts

This is quite an important thing to do since your payment history makes up a bulk of your credit card score. When you get current on your delinquent accounts, you will be making  a great positive impact on your credit.

5.   Don't Apply for Credit

When in the process of repairing your credit score, it is best to avoid making any applications for credit. In most likelihood, the application will be rejected and it will further damage the credit score –  which is the exact opposite of what you wish to do. Don't fall for the amazing advertising techniques: airline miles, cash back bonuses, gifts, etc.

6.   Don't Close Accounts in a Hurry

Closing a credit card account that has become delinquent is a very tempting option. However, do not give in to the temptation as the closure of the account may affect your credit score negatively. Only once you have ascertained that this will not be the case should you close an account.

7.   Talk to Creditors

Talking to creditors is not as bad as you think in the situation you are in. Talking to them can actually be beneficial to you as they might have a temporary hardship program to reduce your monthly payments until your credit situation improves.

8.   Start Paying off Debts

In order to improve your credit card score, you should start paying off your debts. If you don't have enough cash, selling off personal belongings for cash will help. Although it will be hard to part with your belongings, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

9.   Seek Professional help

Consumer credit counseling can assist you in improving your credit situation if the measures taken by one doesn't prove helpful. This should be the last resort though. The credit counseling agencies can be found through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

10.    Patience

Losing patience, although quite natural, should be avoided at all costs. One desperate move and all your work will come to a naught. Since your credit history did not plunge over night, you should not expect it to improve in a day. The process of improvement can be long and continuing paying off your debts will help you improve your credit card score.

If you follow these guidelines, you will certainly be able to improve your credit by yourself.
